New Radio Station Tower

For those of you that follow my blog, you know Michael and I own a radio station, that operates on both the AM and FM dial. A few years ago, Michael came across an opportunity to apply for a larger tower for the FM signal. After months of looking for land that is the right elevation, months of engineering studies and applications filed with the FCC and FAA, the new 430 foot tower is almost complete. I thought it would be neat to share the progression with you.

This is a picture of the base before the tower went up.

20 foot sections of tower freshly painted and ready to be installed.

At 80 feet

Looking up

I know it is hard to tell in the picture, but if you look on the bottom right of the tower, you will see another section being lifted.

This is why I couldn't go out there much....it made me SO nervous seeing these guys dangling from the tower.

Almost done. This is at 420 feet. To give you a sense of scale....that is a man climbing down the tower towards the top. Yikes!

The last section to go up....a 10 foot section that holds the beacon light.

Hoisting the last section up. They use a wench to pull the sections up (the top line attached to the section), and then another guy has to pull a rope (the line coming off the bottom of the section) to keep the section being raised from hitting the tower as it goes up.

A view of what's going on below.

The new tower is a 430' directional antenna which will improve our coverage area, especially in the Montgomery area. The tower guys are hoping to be done tomorrow. Next the engineer will make the adjustments to get the big switch ready. Say a prayer with me that all this hard work with be worth it!!
